How Sarah Beeny made East Gifting Outfit’s small home office perfect in every way
Launching a business is daunting - especially when you don’t have a dedicated space to work. After countless nights working on East Gifting Outfit from the kitchen table I was in desperate need of an office space. So when Sarah Beeny’s Renovate Don’t Relocate team contacted me I jumped at the chance to resolve my problem.
In Season One of Renovate Don’t Relocate Sarah redesigned three rooms in our Victorian townhouse to make it work better for our family’s needs. You can see the episode here:
Fast forward two years and our needs have dramatically changed. There’s a new baby and East Gifting Outfit has launched. For an office, I tasked Sarah with using some ‘dead space’ in our living area, a tiny 3m x 1m. I expected her to say it wasn’t possible but she was up for the challenge.
The office design needed to serve both creative and functional purposes - office administration and packing gift boxes. Product storage was also essential. It was important to me the office reflected East Gifting Outfit as a luxe brand. The space had to work really hard to meet all these needs, and the design Sarah developed was far beyond my expectations.
The main reasons it works so well are the clever use of colour, furniture, mirrors and lighting. The off-black feature wall is eye catching, but doesn’t close in the space. The addition of white light spotlights provides daylight, whilst the warm light omitted from the overhead pendant makes the desk space feel intimate. Large oval mirrors open the space, whilst minimalist shelving acts as storage for gift trays and cards. The desk and shelving unit is a perfect fit, being slimline but also wide enough to work and store the gift boxes.
Desk Accessories and Decorations
The accessories/decorations needed to serve three purposes:
- be beautiful,
- be unique (from small businesses), and
- be practical
Desk Absalom Classics - Bar Table No. 1 (£299)
Countless hours on the laptop, packing gift boxes and handwriting notes - the desk had to be perfect. Tick to size, height and the fact it's made from reclaimed wood and is sustainable. It was worth the search.
Twig Half Pint Jug Jinny Ngui Design (£15)
Jinny who designs, hand presses and kiln fires these beautiful bone china pieces is a close friend of mine. The Twig Half Pint Jug takes pride of place on the desk as a pen holder. The twig design, a silhouette of a London Plane tree, is bold in design and reflects East Gifting Outfit’s signature style. Use for milk, flowers or as a penholder - it’s so versatile.
Phone stand and trinket tray (with terrazzo mussel shell) Badger & Birch (£25)
From the Cornish Coast, Hazel from Badger & Birch handmakes her home and lifestyle products - focusing on design, natural sustainable materials and minimising waste. She takes waste shells from a local restaurant, crushing them to add to her designs. A practical piece, it allows you to scroll on your phone, with a bonus space to put trinkets such as rings.
Fern Dennington’s Florist (£10)
Dennington’s is my local florist. Creating the most A M A Z I N G flower arrangements. The fern was hand picked by them to suit the office space. You’ll also spot their beautiful floral arrangements on our kitchen table.
Iron Vessel Fig Tree Scented Candle SOH Melbourne (£53)
Candle splurge, the matte black iron vessel is a statement piece. Emitting a rich scent of figs it has a calming effect. It also reminds me of home, as I used to live in Prahran where their headquarters are based.
Mini vases on wall shelves:
Miniature Bottle Trio (pin grid vase pictured) Jode Pankhurst (£58)
Jode Pankhurst miniature bottles have been an obsession of mine, which I discovered in Search and Rescue in Stoke Newington. Incredibly cute, but also a powerful statement with their bold patterns. I love it’s contrast against our ‘Someone decided to boost your day’ box inserts.
Terrazzo Grass Stem Vase Badger & Birch (£12)
The mini vase obsession continues... The Badger & Birch mini vase in black is dark and non-symmetrical with white flecks of natural oyster shell. It contrasts against my white gift cards and monochrome envelopes and adds class with a single grass stem.
I hope you love East Gifting Outfit’s workspace. It is a joy to work amongst, being in such a beautiful space that emits a sense of calm even when the working day is stressful.
Each and every gift box is packed in this space (with love) by myself and I feel incredibly privileged to be able to do so knowing it will boost someone’s day.
Thanks for reading about East Gifting Outfit’s small home office and why it is so perfect for our small business.
